TRUE PH MINUS 64 OZ Description: Safely lowers pH of tap or pond water when used as directed. Use when preparing tap water for new ponds, making water changes, or adding to make up for evaporation. A good pH test kit is required for use of this product.
Directions: This is a professional strength product. Exercise care! If in doubt, use less, then measure pH. Consult an authoritative guide for the proper pH of the type of fish you are keeping. Most ponds and water gardens do well with a pH in the range of 7 to 8. Test the pH. Add one tablespoon (3 capfuls or 15ml) per 30 gallons (120 liters) of tap or pond water to lower pH. Several additions may be required to overcome highly alkaline waters. This is indicated by excessive pH bounce or return of pH to the initial pH. Wait 24 hours after addition to re-measure pH and adjust again as necessary. Even if bounce occurs, pH will eventually come under control, as alkalinity decreases with each addition. In new ponds, it may be necessary to remove alkaline rocks to properly lower pH, as the rocks will continue to dissolve into the water raise the pH up again.
Considerations for use: Water pH is one of the most important parameters to consider when testing a pond. A pH that is too low or too high will affect the health of the fish and plants! Since many water departments are now increasing pH it is necessary, in many cases, to lower pH to provide a safe environment for the fish and plants. How much of this product that is required to lower the pH a given amount is dependent on the alkalinity (or buffering capacity) of the tap water. In some areas the alkalinity is low and not much Kent WaterGarden True pH Minus is needed. In other areas, the alkalinity is extremely high, and excessive amounts may be required. Leaching of alkaline materials from concrete ponds may also contribute to the problem.
It is prudent to start off using a small amount of this product at first. Adjust the pH multiple times, if necessary, to determine the amount required to lower the pH of your particular water to the proper value. Further experience will be required to determine when additions will be necessary to maintain the proper value. In highly alkaline waters (indicated by pH bounce), the alkalinity will be lowered with each addition of this product, so that less will be required on each addition to cause the same pH drop. If the pond is new, and concrete and alkaline rocks have been used, several changes of water will be necessary, and some aging (i.e. allowing some algae and sediment to cover the exposed alkaline materials to slow their leaching into the pond) will be required to get the pH under control.
